Forgot your password: recovery steps before you contact support

A forgotten computer, email, or account password is common. The safe fix is almost always the provider's own recovery flow — not a link from search results, a pop-up, or a message claiming to reset it for you.

Answer first

Start with the provider's own official recovery link (your computer's lock-screen "Reset password" option, or Microsoft, Google, Apple, or your email provider's account-recovery page). Confirm you can still reach the recovery email or phone number on file, check simple things like Caps Lock and keyboard language, and never give your password itself to anyone, including support.

1. Use the official recovery path

On a computer lock screen, use the built-in "I forgot my password" or "Reset password" link. For email or online accounts, go directly to the provider's real sign-in page and choose "Forgot password" there — not through a link someone else sent you.

2. Check the basics first

Caps Lock, a different keyboard layout, or a browser auto-filling an old saved password are common causes that look like a forgotten password but aren't.

3. Confirm your recovery details still work

Password resets are usually confirmed by a code sent to a recovery email or phone number. Make sure that inbox or number is still one you can access before starting the reset.

4. Prepare details for support

If you still need help, note which account or device is affected, the exact error or message shown, and how far the official recovery flow got before it stopped working. Never include the password itself in chat, email, or a support ticket.

Quick FAQ

Should I share my password with support?

No. Legitimate support never needs your actual password. You always type it yourself into the provider's official sign-in or recovery page, never into chat or over the phone.

What if the recovery email or phone number is also out of date?

Most providers offer an alternate identity-verification path for this case. Look for "try another way" on the recovery screen, and keep a note of which step you reached before contacting support.
